Skate Program Descriptions

Parent and Tot Skate
This program is designed for parents/guardians and preschool children to skate together and is open to preschool-aged children.

  • Children must be accompanied on the ice by a parent/guardian 18 years or older; No individual adult or child will be permitted.
  • Aggressive play, power skating, use of hockey sticks or figure skating is not allowed.
  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • Wearing CSA-approved helmets is strongly recommended.
  • Skate Aids are permitted for use during this skate – no chairs, strollers, pylons, sleighs or any other equipment is allowed (each arena has a limited number of skate aids for use)
  • Wheelchairs/Sledges are permitted. Caregivers are welcome to assist but must wear ice skates or ice cleats.
Public Skates
Open to all ages and abilities. Enjoy time on the ice with family and friends.

  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • Children under the age of 15 must come with a parent or guardian 18 years or older.
  • Wearing CSA-approved helmets is strongly recommended.
  • Aggressive play, power skating, use of hockey sticks or figure skating is not allowed.
  • Participants must be always in control – Skate in approved direction only; do not skate in groups; do not carry children; do not sit on rink boards; do not stop where you may obstruct other skaters and always maintain reasonable control of speed, course, and direction.

  • Food, beverages, cell phones or any other hand-held devices are not allowed on ice.
  • Skate aids are permitted during this skate – no chairs, strollers, pylons, sleighs or any other equipment is allowed.

18+ Adult Skate
Adult Skates are an awesome way to get some exercise and meet new people!

  • The program is unsupervised. Must be 18 years or older.
  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • Wearing CSA-approved helmets is strongly recommended.
  • Aggressive play, power skating, use of hockey sticks or figure skating is not allowed.
  • Wheelchairs/Sledges are permitted. Caregivers are welcome to assist but must wear ice skates or ice cleats.
15+ Adult Sticks and Pucks
This is a program for adults interested in practicing their stick and puck-handling skills.

  • Program is unsupervised. Must be 15 years or older.
  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • Wearing CSA-approved helmets is mandatory for all participants.
  • Facemasks and full equipment is strongly recommended.
  • There is NO scrimmage, aggressive play, or shinny play allowed.
  • Nets will be provided on ice, however, goalies are NOT permitted in nets.
Family Sticks and Pucks
Designed as an opportunity for parents interested in participating with their child(ren) age 14 and under to develop and practice stick and puck-handling skills.

  • The program is unsupervised, and all participants must pay and wear skates.
  • All participants must be supervised on the ice by a parent/guardian 18 years or older.
  • Aggressive play, scrimmage/shinny play, power shooting and power skating are NOT permitted.
  • Wearing CSA-approved helmets is mandatory – a facemask is mandatory for all participants under 18 years of age.
  • Wearing full hockey equipment by children is strongly recommended.
  • Power shots and slapshots are NOT permitted – puck is not to be raised off the ice.
  • Nets will be provided; however, goalies are NOT permitted in nets.
  • Skate aids are not permitted during this skate – no chairs, strollers, pylons, sleighs or any other equipment is allowed.
15+ Shinny
  An informal “drop-in” pick-up game of hockey where participants 15 years of age and older can participate in self-organized, non-contact hockey.

  • Program is unsupervised – Participants plan and organize gameplay themselves.
  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • Body contact is NOT permitted.
  • CSA-approved helmets and full hockey equipment are mandatory – a facemask is mandatory for all participants under 18 years of age.
  • Nets will be provided – however, aggressiveness or horseplay will not be tolerated.
Figure Skating Drop-In
An informal “drop-in” time for figure skaters to practice their skills individually.

  • The program is unsupervised and is open to any figure skater who is currently participating in Skate Canada programming (or has previously participated).
  • All participants must pay and wear skates.
  • All skaters are expected to be aware of others on the ice and maintain a safe environment.
  • CSA-approved helmets are strongly recommended.
  • Children must be accompanied to the arena by a parent/guardian (not required on ice).

Norfolk County General Arena Guidelines

Arena Rules and Guidelines are modelled from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Inc. (ORFA) Public Skating Guidelines (Sept. 2018).

  • All participants MUST PAY either by registering in advance on ENCORE or with exact cash at the arena – Courtesy Boxes are available in each facility
  • Participants are expected to read and abide by all posted signs, respect and cooperate with arena staff, respect the facility, and respect fellow participants/spectators. Any hazards, injuries or accidents should be reported to arena staff prior to leaving the facility.
  • Children 14 years or less are to be accompanied by a Parent/Guardian over 18 years of age who must be present within the facility.
  • Games that endanger the safety and/or enjoyment of others are not permitted at any time; this includes both on and off-ice. The use of hockey sticks, scooters/skateboards, or horseplay is not permitted.
  • Food and beverage consumption is only permitted in the arena lobby and spectator seating areas.
Attire
  • Ice skates are required; shoes/boots are not allowed.
  • CSA-approved helmets are strongly recommended for all participants (See skate-specific descriptions for any mandatory requirements)
Awareness
  • Be aware and abide by all rules specific to the skate program.
  • Do not skate in groups; do not stop where you may obstruct other skaters, and maintain reasonable control of speed, course and direction.
  • Be responsible for knowing the range of your ability while on skates, and always skate within the limits of that ability and as appropriate to the session in which you are skating.
  • Be aware of others and maintain a safe environment for all. Do not act in a manner that may cause or contribute injury to yourself or any other person, and do not throw or leave objects on the ice surface.
  • Figure skating maneuvers are only permitted during the Figure Skating Drop-In program.
  • Skating under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other control-impairing substance is strictly prohibited.
  • No skater will be permitted on the ice while resurfacing is being completed. All exits are to be kept clear, and sitting on the rink boards is not permitted at any time.
Use of Technology
  • The use of headphones/headsets, cell phones, cameras or any other handheld electronic devices are not to be used while skating.
Inclusion and Special Provisions
  • Wheelchairs & Sledges, and skate aids are welcome at public, parent & tot, and adult skates. Individuals using these devices must travel in the same direction as other skaters. Caregivers are welcome to assist individuals; however, they must wear skates or ice cleats when on the ice surface.
  • Chairs, sleds, strollers, and pylons ARE NOT permitted on the ice surface at any time.
  • A limited number of skate aids are available at each arena.
  • Carrying infants/children on the ice (e.g., on shoulders, in arms or in a carrier) IS NOT permitted.
