 History of Simcoe Farmers Market

As early as 1849 George Kent donated some land to be used for a market. The area between what is now known as Robinson, Head, Talbot and Market Streets, was an open-air market until 1868. At that time a building was erected, mainly to be used by the market butchers with the rest of the market, including live animals, outside.

Farms, Wineries, Culinary and Food Suppliers

Norfolk County is the top producing area for farm fresh produce in Ontario. From asparagus to zucchini, Norfolk’s growers supply major markets across North America. In fact, Norfolk County’s farmers sold more than $400 million in commodities in 2005, making them key players in a global marketplace. Norfolk produce is safe, tasty and competitively priced. The goal of the “Direct from Norfolk” campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of buying local produce and other farm products.
