May 5, 2023 — Norfolk County is illuminating its Administration Building, at 50 Colborne Street South, green from sunset until midnight on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7, to celebrate the King’s coronation.

The illumination of a community landmark coincides with other municipalities across Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth. Other Ontario landmarks participating include the Peace Tower in Canada’s Capital Region, the CN Tower, and Niagara Falls.

His Majesty King Charles III, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, automatically became king when his mother died on Sept. 8, 2022. His coronation on May 6 will be the first coronation of a Canadian head of state in seven decades. Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy, where the king serves as the head of state, and the elected government runs the country.

“On behalf of Norfolk County Council, we are proud to mark the Coronation of the new Monarch by joining communities across Ontario, Canada, and the Commonwealth, in the lighting of one of our landmarks, Norfolk County’s Administrative Building,” said Mayor Amy Martin.

Norfolk County Public Library’s Simcoe and Port Dover Branches will air the coronation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all branches will have displays and refreshments for patrons. The public can visit the Government of Canada’s Coronation website to learn more about commemorative activities happening across the county, as well as the Canadian Coronation Emblem and its symbolism. The Government of Ontario’s website also has information on free cultural attractions across the province on May 6.
