January 22, 2020, Simcoe, ON – A new exhibit of photography taken during a cultural exchange in Mexico opens this weekend at the Norfolk Arts Centre.

“Cuento De Dos Jardins” (A Tale of Two Gardens) features photographic works by Patricia Deadman, taken in the area of Merida, capital of the state of Yucatan.

“The work was influenced by language and text created by Canadian and Mexican artists and writers,” Deadman said.

As a Tuscarora (near Niagara Falls, NY) artist, Deadman’s lens-based work explores the relationship between culture, history, and land from a First Nations perspective.

“I think that the public will not only be fascinated with Deadman’s images but also with the fact she still is using film and working in a darkroom. No Photoshop!” noted NAC Curator Roberta Grosland.

Deadman is a visual artist, independent curator, and writer. She obtained a Fine Arts Diploma from Fanshawe College in London and her BFA from the University of Windsor. Her work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions since the 1980s, and she has participated in artist residencies in Canada, Mexico, and France. Deadman has been a curator for two decades, currently with the Museum and Art Gallery at Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford.

Join Deadman at the opening reception Jan. 25 from 1 – 4 p.m. She’ll provide a tour of the exhibit – which runs until Mar. 28 – at 2 p.m.
