Norfolk County is asking residents for their thoughts, suggestions, and ideas on the Simcoe Recreation Centre’s multi-purpose floor.

Part of a future retrofit and upgrade project that is still in the early planning stages, feedback will be used to help staff understand the overall community vision for the project and guide the consultants and engineers in developing preliminary interior design concepts for a phased approach for future renovations.

The multi-purpose floor space at the Simcoe Recreation Centre, previously an arena/ice pad surface, was converted to an indoor recreational space in 2021. The polished concrete surface is used for many indoor purposes, including pickleball, floor hockey, badminton, indoor walking, fitness and dry land training, indoor sports practices, roller derby, large event venues, children’s programming, and birthday parties.

To get the discussion started, residents are being asked questions such as:

  • What would you like to see the multi-purpose floor used for? For example, pickleball, basketball, indoor soccer?
  • Are there activity amenities that you think should be included? For example, basketball nets or gym mats?
  • Is there a specific type of flooring that you would like to see installed? For example, hardwood, rubber?
  • Are there any design features you would like to see included? For example, the arena boards should be left in/removed; or include a walking/running track.

The preliminary timeline for the Multi-Purpose Floor Conversion Project is:

  • Pre-project engagement: March 2024
  • Design: April 2024 to March 2025
  • Construction: April 2025 to September 2026
