Apr 23 – The Household Hazardous Waste Program in Norfolk County has come a long way from humble beginnings three decades ago.

In 1989 the former Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk held its first collection day in both Simcoe and Cayuga. A total of 132 households in Norfolk County took part.

These days, Norfolk now hosts four separate collections at locations across the county on a yearly basis.

The first of those take place Apr. 27 in Simcoe on 591 Norfolk Street South from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Residents should keep in mind that hazardous waste materials are harmful not simply to humans but animals and the environment if not handled properly.

Electronic waste – such as computers, printers, monitors and TVs – is also accepted.

Accepted items include:

  • Gasoline, oil, and oil filters
  • Aerosol cans
  • Batteries (all types)
  • Household cleaners and disinfectants
  • Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
  • Propane tanks and cylinders
  • Cosmetics
  • Medication, home needles and syringes
  • Paints, varnishes, and stains
  • Pesticides and insecticides
  • Pool chemicals
  • Computers, printers and TVs

Staff is not able to accept drums of material, agricultural/ commercial/industrial waste or PCBs, explosives or radioactive waste. The same goes for microwaves, appliances, smoke detectors and power tools.

Can’t make it to Simcoe’s drop-off? There are three other days this year. They will be held in Delhi on 340 Argyle Ave. May 25 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Langton at 1630 County Road 45 on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and in Port Dover on 135 Hamilton Plank Rd. Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.-2p.m.
