Drawing Foundations for Children

Do you have a young, budding artist in the family? Then look no further than Drawing Foundations for Children at the Norfolk Arts Centre. This program will run Wednesdays, February 20 – April 3 (no class March 13) from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. In this 6 week after school art program students will be introduced to the foundations of drawing. Children will learn about fundamental techniques such as perspective, shading, and composition, and will learn about methods such as drawing from still life. This program will focus on the development of foundational drawing skills and is the perfect class for young students who want to improve their technical ability or learn more the fundamentals of art. This is a great opportunity for children to learn from a professional artist in a friendly and constructive environment.

Local artist Sally Gable will introduce young artists to the basics of drawing. Sally Gable is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art specializing in drawing, painting and photography. Born and raised in Simcoe, Sally has strong attachments to the local landscape which can be seen throughout her artwork, including works in a solo exhibition at the Norfolk Arts Centre in 2011 entitled Kindred Spirits.

The cost of this 6 week program is $60 (10% discount for NAC members); materials will be provided by the Norfolk Arts Centre. Drawing Foundations for Children is open to children ages 8-12.

“Back to Basics II” Adult Drawing Classes

Back by popular demand! A follow up to the fall session of “Back to Basics”, participants will continue to build on drawing foundations with the introduction of new techniques and mediums. In this 6 week course, students will move from working with pencil to coloured conte, charcoal and graphite. Participants will acquire greater knowledge of drawing foundations such as the components for strong composition, two-point perspective and creating dimension through shading, and will explore the basics of figure drawing. “Back to Basics II” is open to artists of all levels, and is perfect for those interested in improving their technique in drawing and other mediums.

Local artist Eve Yantha will provide instruction for this 6 week course. Eve Yantha holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Education from Brock University. She currently teaches Visual Arts, Family Studies and History for the Grand Erie District School Board. In her personal practice, Eve works mainly as a painter in the figurative genre; she is also a member of the Norfolk Potters’ Guild as a functional potter. Over the last 10 years her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across South Western Ontario, including the McMaster Museum of Art, the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology, the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant and the Norfolk Arts Centre.

“Back to Basics II” will run Tuesdays, February 26 – April 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Classes will be held at the Artist Workshop. The fee for this 6 week course is $108 (10% discount for NAC members); materials will be provided by the Norfolk Arts Centre.

This course is open to teens ages 16 and up with adult consent.
