Norfolk County continues to face transportation challenges typical of rural municipalities, where residents must often travel long distances to access employment, education, healthcare, and essential services. Programs such as Ride Norfolk play an important role in providing local transit options.
Where we’re at
As one of Ontario's leading agricultural regions and a growing destination for tourism, manufacturing, and residential development, every year, millions of dollars in agricultural products, food processing goods, and commercial freight travel along Highways 24, 3 and 6, yet both highways remain largely two-lane corridors that are increasingly operating beyond their intended capacity.
Widening Highways 24, 3 and 6 would:
- Improve road safety by reducing congestion, dangerous passing movements, and collision risks.
- Support Ontario's agri-food supply chain by providing more efficient transportation routes for producers, processors, and distributors.
- Improve connectivity for residents travelling to employment centres, healthcare services, and educational institutions throughout southwestern Ontario.
Norfolk asks that the Province:
- Increase and stabilize funding for rural and regional transit systems, such as Ride Norfolk, and support the development of a coordinated inter-municipal transit strategy across neighbouring municipalities. This should include investment in service expansion and improved frequency.
- And prioritize and invest in the widening and modernization of Highways #24, #3 and #6 to improve safety, increase capacity, and support the efficient movement of people and goods. This includes advancing four-lanes where feasible, improving intersections and business access, and incorporating these corridors into Ontario's long-term transportation infrastructure plans.
