Norfolk County’s agricultural heritage, Lake Erie waterfront, beaches, trails, farms, culinary experiences, festivals, cultural attractions and events provide significant opportunities to attract visitors and generate economic activity throughout the County.
Where we’re at
Council has approved a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT), beginning in 2028, which is expected to generate more than $700,000 annually. This demonstrates Norfolk’s commitment to building a sustainable tourism economy and creating a dedicated source of tourism investment.
However, rural destinations face different challenges than larger urban tourism centres. Norfolk’s attractions are spread across a large geographic area, and tourism infrastructure must serve both residents and visitors. Provincial investment can help us leverage local dollars, strengthen businesses, create jobs and encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more within the community.
The Province has identified tourism as an important driver of economic growth, job creation and community prosperity. Its current programs already support destination and product development, tourism businesses, festivals and events.
Norfolk asks that the Province:
- Continue and expand provincial investment in rural tourism destinations, with dedicated funding and programs to include waterfront and rural communities.
- Provide funding for tourism infrastructure, including improvements that support waterfront destinations, trails, cycling, wayfinding, visitor amenities and connections between Norfolk’s communities and tourism attractions.
