Norfolk County has approximately 135 km of Lake Erie shoreline, with ongoing erosion threatening public infrastructure, municipal assets and more than 33 private properties. Current estimated shoreline protection needs exceed $8 million.
Where we're at
Regular dredging of Norfolk's harbours, including Port Dover and Port Rowan, is essential to maintain safe navigation, support commercial and recreational boating, protect the local tourism economy, and manage sediment accumulation. Provincial support is needed to address the rising costs of maintaining safe, functional waterfront infrastructure.
Norfolk asks that the Province
- Continue to prioritize provincial support and funding to permanently remediate the Forestry Farm Road (FFR) gas well, including addressing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) discharges, erosion, and subsurface pressure migration, while ensuring long-term monitoring and environmental protection measures are in place
- Increase provincial investment in shoreline protection, erosion mitigation, and harbour dredging for Lake Erie communities by establishing sustainable funding that reflects the true scale of infrastructure risk facing municipalities
