Norfolk's health care system is under significant strain. Norfolk General Hospital is the only hospital serving the entire County and regularly operates at or above 100% capacity. At the same time, Norfolk has fewer primary care physicians per capita than the provincial average, leaving many residents without a family doctor.
Where we're at
An aging and growing population is increasing demand for care. Norfolk's population aged 65 and older grew by more than 25% between 2016 and 2024 and is projected to increase by another 41% by 2027, creating greater demand for acute care, long-term care, and community-based health services. Replacing the current century-old hospital through the provincial process is expected to take nearly a decade, making timely action essential.
The community is investing, but provincial partnership is critical. Norfolk County, Norfolk General Hospital, and residents have already committed significant funding toward health care improvements, including modernization of the surgical department and physician recruitment initiatives. Provincial investment is needed to fast-track the Campus of Care, modernize aging infrastructure, and strengthen physician recruitment and retention so residents can access the care they need close to home.
Norfolk asks that the Province
- Accelerate provincial approval and funding for Norfolk General Hospital's Campus of Care and hospital redevelopment project, while increasing provincial support for physician recruitment and retention initiatives to ensure residents have timely access to hospital and primary care services
