Norfolk County launches "Three Ps" campaign featuring Captain Clean
Norfolk County is excited to announce the launch of its new "Three Ps" campaign, aimed at educating residents about what not to flush, and the impact non-flushable items can have on plumbing and County infrastructure.
About the "Three Ps" campaign
The campaign emphasizes that only three items should be flushed down the toilet: pee, poop, and toilet paper. Items such as hair, fats (grease and cooking oils), cotton swabs, sanitary products, food waste, and wipes, including “flushable” wipes, should never be flushed. To help bring this message to life, Norfolk is introducing toilet paper superhero, Captain Clean.
Improper flushing habits can lead to costly repairs for both homeowners and the county. Blockages in the sewage system can cause backups, environmental damage, and increased maintenance costs. By following the "Three P" rule, residents can help keep our plumbing systems running smoothly and protect our local environment.
Introducing Captain Clean
Captain Clean, Norfolk’s toilet paper superhero, will be featured in educational materials, social media posts, and community events, to spread the message that only pee, poop, and toilet paper should be flushed. Captain Clean will help residents understand the importance of proper toilet use and the impact it has on Norfolk’s plumbing, infrastructure and environment.
Proper disposal of non-flushable items
Residents are encouraged to dispose of non-flushable items properly. Use the trash for most items and take household hazardous waste like paint and chemicals to designated disposal sites or Norfolk’s household hazardous waste depots in the spring and fall. Products labeled as "flushable" can still cause major issues in our sewage system because they don't break down, leading to clogged and damaged pipes.
Fats, oils and grease
Residents are encouraged to store fats, oils, and grease in a container until they cool, then throw them in the trash. Never pour them down the drain. Instead, store them in a grease container until they cool and can be thrown in the trash.
Safe disposal of sharps and medications
The campaign reinforces that sharps should never be flushed but should be disposed of through local pharmacy collection programs or dropped into a sharps collection container.
Flushing medication can harm the environment. Residents can take unwanted or expired medication to a local pharmacy for proper disposal.
Get involved
Norfolk County encourages all residents to participate in the "Three P" campaign to help prevent plumbing issues and protect the environment by reducing the number of non-flushable items that end up in the sewage system.
