New signage at sanitary overflow locations across Norfolk County
New signage is being installed at various sanitary overflow locations throughout Norfolk County this month.
The signs are only intended to identify the location of sanitary overflow infrastructure, not that an overflow event is occurring. Residents should not be alarmed if they notice water flowing at these locations.
All sanitary overflow locations are monitored 24/7 by Norfolk County Operations staff, and strict protocols are in place in the event of an actual overflow. In the rare case of an overflow, Norfolk County and its operations partner, Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), follow a detailed response process, including immediate notifications to relevant authorities, water sampling and public safety measures.
The signs are part of a new provincial regulatory requirement under the Consolidated Linear Infrastructure Environmental Compliance Approval (CLI-ECA), issued by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Norfolk County is required to publish reports of sanitary overflow events annually. To view Norfolk’s wastewater treatment facility compliance reports, visit norfolkcounty.ca/WWTF.
