Fireworks rules and safety tips for long weekends in 2025

As long weekends approach and residents begin making plans, Norfolk County is reminding the community to stay safe and follow local fireworks rules and safety practices.

Know the rules:

Residents are encouraged to review Norfolk County’s Fireworks By-Law before purchasing or setting off fireworks. Highlights of the rules include:

  • Fireworks are permitted only two days before, and one day after, the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day, Canada Day, US Independence Day, the Civic Holiday, and Labour Day.
  • Fireworks must not be discharged after 11 p.m.
  • It is prohibited to set off fireworks on municipal property or roads.
  • Individuals must own the property where fireworks are discharged or have clear permission from the property owner.

Staying safe:

Those planning small fireworks displays at home or in their neighbourhood should keep the following safety precautions in mind:

  • Fireworks should only be handled and ignited by responsible adults who understand the associated risks.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire.
  • Choose a wide-open space away from trees, dry grass, structures, or other flammable materials.
  • Residents whose properties do not meet the size or clearance requirements for the safe use of fireworks are encouraged to attend a public display instead.
