2023 Proclamations

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2023

On September 7, 2021, Norfolk County Council proclaimed September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On Friday, September 29 Norfolk County staff will raise the ‘Survivor Flag’ at the County Administration Building in Simcoe. The flag will stay up throughout the weekend.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation seeks to honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Survivors and their families and communities and to ensure that public commemoration of their history and the legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

National Drowning Prevention Week

July 16 to 22, 2023

The Lifesaving Society is a national, charitable organization working to prevent drowning and reduce water-related injury through training programs, Water Smart® public education, drowning research, and aquatic safety standards. The Lifesaving Society certifies Canada’s National Lifeguards.

National Drowning Prevention Week is one of the Society’s leading public education initiatives, with events taking place across the country to focus media and community attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention.

During this week, the Society urges individuals to:

  • Supervise children in and around the water
  • Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages while participating in aquatic activities
  • Wear a life jacket when boating

If every Canadian followed these steps, we could greatly reduce Canada’s drowning rate.
