Plan for every season during Emergency Preparedness Week

Norfolk County is joining communities across Canada in recognizing Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week from May 4 to 10, 2025.

EP Week is a national campaign that encourages Canadians to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones in the event of an emergency. This year’s theme, “Plan for every season,” serves as a reminder that emergencies can happen any time of year—and it’s never too early to be ready.

A few small actions can make a big difference in how residents respond to unexpected events. Everyone is encouraged to:

  • Know the risks – Understanding the types of emergencies most likely to affect Norfolk County—such as floods, winter storms, or power outages—can help with planning.
  • Make a plan – Having an emergency plan in place means knowing how to stay in touch and where to meet if family members are separated when an emergency occurs.
  • Build a kit – A well-stocked emergency kit should contain essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit. Kits should support each household for at least 72 hours.
  • Stay informed – During an emergency, updates and information will be shared on the County’s website at norfolkcounty.ca/News and official social media accounts (@NorfolkCounty on Facebook and X, @NorfolkCounty.ca on Instagram).

Gord Stilwell, Norfolk County Fire Chief

“Emergencies don’t follow a schedule—they can happen in any season. That’s why this year’s theme, “Plan for every season”, is so important. Whether it’s spring flooding, summer heat, fall storms, or winter power outages, having a plan and emergency kit in place can make a real difference. I encourage everyone to take time this week to get prepared and stay ready, all year long.”
