Norfolk County thanks Ontario government’s $10 million investment in Port Dover fisheries facility

Norfolk County is celebrating a major boost to its fisheries sector, thanks to a $10 million investment from the Ontario government to upgrade facilities in Port Dover and Wheatley. This strategic investment will strengthen Ontario’s fishing sector, sustain local jobs, and stay competitive against future economic uncertainty.

The upgrades to the Port Dover facility will include modernizing infrastructure and adding new technologies to improve efficiency and safety. Expanded laboratory space will support the processing of samples to help ensure the long-term health of fish populations in Lake Erie, better positioning the Port Dover facility to continue to support current and future needs.

The investment aligns with the Ontario government’s broader plan to build Ontario through critical infrastructure renewal and support for the agri-food sector.

Commercial and recreational fishing are important to the heritage, culture and economy of Norfolk County, and Ontario. Norfolk County will continue to work closely with provincial partners to support sustainable growth and innovation in the fisheries sector.

Mayor Amy Martin

“On behalf of Norfolk County Council, I am grateful to the Province of Ontario for recognizing the importance of Lake Erie’s fisheries to our economy and way of life. The facility in Port Dover plays a vital role in supporting sustainable fish populations and the livelihoods of many in our community. This investment ensures that our region remains a leader in freshwater fisheries management and innovation and speaks to the strong relationships we have built with Minister Harris and staff at the Ministry of Natural Resources.”

Ward 6 Councillor Adam Veri

“In the minds of many longtime locals, commercial fishing is synonymous with Port Dover. Some newer residents may not be aware that Port Dover was once home to the largest freshwater commercial fishing fleet in the world. Norfolk County is committed to preserving and celebrating this important heritage through the Port Dover Harbour Museum. As Port Dover’s Norfolk County Council representative, I extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Ministry of Natural Resources for this investment, which ensures that commercial fishing continues to thrive into the future.”
