Norfolk County secures provincial funding to combat invasive species

Norfolk County is pleased to announce it has received two grants from the Invasive Species Centre, supported by Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, to strengthen invasive species management across the municipality.

Invasive Species Action Fund

The forestry team has been awarded funding through the Invasive Species Action Fund to support on-the-ground management and monitoring of Dog-Strangling Vine, one of Ontario’s highest-risk invasive species. This investment will enhance Norfolk’s ability to document and control known occurrences of the plant, while raising public awareness about its environmental impacts.

Invasive Phragmites Control Fund

The stormwater team has received funding through the Invasive Phragmites Control Fund to purchase equipment and receive training necessary to monitor and treat invasive Phragmites. This initiative will build internal capacity to manage Phragmites within stormwater infrastructure, including ditches, pipe inlets and outlets, and stormwater ponds. If left unmanaged, Phragmites can obstruct these systems, increasing flood risks for the community.

These projects align with province-wide strategies to coordinate and expand invasive species management efforts across Ontario. By investing in prevention and control, Norfolk County is taking proactive steps to protect its natural environment and critical infrastructure.
