Norfolk County responds to cemetery theft investigation

Norfolk County is deeply concerned about recent thefts from local cemeteries, including the removal of bronze memorial items. These acts are not only criminal, but they are also profoundly disrespectful to the deceased, their families, and the communities they affect.

Norfolk County thanks its community partner, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), for their proactive and independent efforts in investigating these incidents. A recent patrol at Waterford Greenwood Cemetery led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of stolen property. The County commends the OPP’s continued dedication to protecting public spaces.

Monuments and memorial items placed in cemeteries remain the property of the families who installed them. Their theft is a serious offence under the Criminal Code. Norfolk County encourages residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Norfolk County is currently reviewing and updating its Cemetery Bylaw to ensure alignment with provincial legislation and industry standards. The County remains committed to preserving the dignity and safety of cemetery spaces through ongoing collaboration with the OPP, cemetery professionals, and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.
