Norfolk County provides update on Highway 3 structure fire
Norfolk County is providing an update regarding the large structure fire that occurred at a commercial livestock barn located west of Simcoe on July 14, 2026.
Based on information available at this time, the majority of water used during firefighting operations was contained within the barn's underground manure storage pit, significantly reducing the potential for runoff from the site.
Norfolk County Fire Department staff have confirmed that manure remained contained, and that firefighting water did not leave the affected property. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) has confirmed that runoff from the fire was contained on-site and, at this time, no environmental runoff concerns have been identified.
Cleanup activities will continue under the oversight of the appropriate provincial agencies to help ensure the site is managed safely and in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.
Norfolk County is not aware of any impacts to the municipal drinking water system or municipal drinking water sources resulting from firefighting activities. Due to the high volume of water moved through the system, some localized residents may experience temporary discoloured water.
Norfolk County thanks the firefighters, County staff, and partner agencies who responded to this challenging incident. Firefighters worked for extended periods to contain the fire, protect surrounding properties, and support environmental protection measures.
Staff from Norfolk County's Water and Wastewater Division also worked closely with fire crews throughout the response, helping maintain the large volumes of water required for firefighting operations while ensuring the municipal drinking water system continued to operate effectively.
Norfolk County recognizes the significant loss experienced by the owners and employees of the farming operation affected by this fire. Norfolk County also acknowledges the loss of animal life resulting from the incident.
