Norfolk County announces Safety Squad naming contest finalists

Norfolk County has announced the finalists in the Safety Squad naming contest; thanks to the creativity of the community, seven characters are one step closer to having names.

After receiving hundreds of submissions through EngageNorfolk.ca, the three top names for each character have been selected. Community members are encouraged to vote at engagenorfolk.ca/safetysquad until November 30, 2025. The names with the most votes will win.

Safety Squad

The shortlisted names are:

  • Ward 1 – Sandhill Crane: Beacon, Skye, Sadie
  • Ward 2 – Grey Fox: Frankie, Freya, Maple
  • Ward 3 – White-Tailed Deer: Ranger, Bucky, Winston
  • Ward 4 – Spotted Salamander: Harbour, Sammy, Norman
  • Ward 5 – Grey Squirrel: Merle, Hazel, Griffin
  • Ward 6 – Yellow Perch: Finn, Percy, Petey
  • Ward 7 – Blanding’s Turtle: Tilly, Blanche, Nova

Each character represents one of Norfolk’s seven Wards and is inspired by a real animal from the area. The characters were created and illustrated by local student Will Wesh during his high school co-op placement with Norfolk’s Communications team. The team will be used in future campaigns to help make important topics such as safety, civic awareness, and environmental stewardship more relatable and memorable to children and youth.

Norfolk County thanks everyone who submitted ideas and invites residents to help choose the winners. Each winner will receive a $50 VISA gift card and a Norfolk Safety Kit.
