Fireworks safety reminders for holidays in 2026
As spring and summer holidays approach and residents make celebration plans, Norfolk County is reminding the community to follow fireworks rules and take steps to stay safe.
Know the rules
Before purchasing or setting off fireworks, residents are encouraged to review Norfolk County’s fireworks rules. Key requirements include:
- Fireworks are permitted only two days before and one day after the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day, Canada Day, U.S. Independence Day, the Civic Holiday, and Labour Day.
- Fireworks must not be discharged after 11 p.m.
- Fireworks cannot be set off on municipal property or roads.
- Individuals must own the property where fireworks are discharged or have clear permission from the property owner.
Staying safe
Anyone planning a small fireworks display at home or in their neighbourhood is encouraged to follow these safety reminders:
- Fireworks should only be handled and ignited by responsible adults who understand the associated risks.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire.
- Choose a wide-open space away from trees, dry grass, buildings, or other flammable materials.
- Residents whose properties do not meet size or clearance requirements are encouraged to attend a public fireworks display instead.
- Only discharge fireworks if wind or adverse weather conditions do not create a safety hazard
- Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions on the firework; it will tell you how far it will reach. The safety zone should be at least one and a half times this distance.
