November 23, 2021 – Three new pedestrian crosswalks are nearing completion on some of Norfolk County’s busiest roads. With that in mind, county staff wishes to remind all drivers that pedestrians have the right of way.

The new pedestrian crossings are located on West Street and Cedar Street in Simcoe and James Street in Delhi.

Crossovers allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. Drivers and cyclists must yield when the pedestrian crossover is activated. Crossovers are easily identified by specific signs, pavement markings, push buttons, and flashing lights.

Drivers and cyclists must stop behind pavement markings and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road before proceeding. In September of 2018, the penalty for motorists who endanger pedestrians included increased in terms of both fines and demerit points.

Drivers and cyclists not following the rules may face fines of up to $1,000, while drivers may incur up to four demerit points.

The new crosswalks are scheduled to be completed and in operation this week.

Crosswalks are a part of many construction projects the County is undertaking. For more details on these, and all other projects please visit Norfolk’s Construction Projects page.
