Norfolk County will observe International Overdose Awareness Day by lowering the flags at Governor Simcoe Square in Simcoe to half-mast on Friday, August 30, at 1 p.m. Community members are welcome to attend this important observance. The flags will stay at half-mast until Sunday, September 1.
International Overdose Awareness Day aims to create a better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and foster changes that reduce the harms associated with drug use.
A poisoning, commonly referred to as an overdose, occurs when the body is exposed to a toxic dose of a substance or a combination of substances. While it is common to associate overdoses with illicit drugs, an individual can experience an overdose or toxicity from other substances, including alcohol and prescription medications.
The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit (HNHU) delivers harm reduction services, such as distributing naloxone kits and offering harm-reduction equipment and health education. Additionally, the HNHU collaborates with various community partners to support individuals who use drugs.
