December 3, 2019, Simcoe, ON – For more than 20 years, Norfolk County, Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services, and Haldimand-Norfolk REACH (Resource Education and Counseling Help) have teamed up to offer a unique experience to Grade 8 girls in our community.

Based at Camp Trillium in Waterford – g.i.r.l.s. (growth, independence, respect, leadership) Power Camp is a three-day program that provides fun and interactive learning experiences in a camp setting for over 50 girls from the counties of Haldimand and Norfolk.

Activities and discussions focus on key issues relating to young teens such as body image, self-esteem, healthy eating, active living, healthy relationships, and personal safety. The camp aims to develop critical thinking skills among young women so that they can make informed choices, and illustrate the links between young women and their community. It also assists in supporting girls making the transition to high school.

Throughout the weekend, girls take part in a ropes course, women’s self-defense training, yoga and numerous interactive workshops and adventures based on body image, peer pressure, media pressure and other issues affecting young girls. The most unique feature of the program is that the camp has a youth-led focus from the very beginning. A group of 30 facilitators has been recruited through local secondary schools, and college programs.

This year’s camp will operate from December 6-8. For more information, visit hngirlspowercamp.com.
