WELCOME TO the 2023 Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Events, Exhibitions and Programs Guide. After a two-year hiatus, we are very pleased to be publishing this again.

Throughout the year, the Norfolk County Museums and Archives host a variety of special events, hands-on workshops, concerts, theatre performances, camp programs and present an engaging array of exhibits. There really is something for everyone.

Join in the family fun at Easter Eggstravaganza hosted by the Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum or tour Oakwood Cemetery with the Norfolk County Archives. What could be more fun than Arbour Dog Races, a new event hosted by the Port Dover Harbour Museum or attending a Halloween Pottery Paint Party at the Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre?

We are very proud of the vast array of quality programs we offer to children and youth. Our sites offer March Break and Summer Camps, special holiday programming and Night at the Museum. Here’s a tip…register early because our programs fill up quickly.

We invite teachers and youth leaders to contact us to find out more about our curriculum-based education programs that can be delivered onsite, in the classroom or virtually. These programs are hands-on, educational, and engaging and a wonderful way to expand your classroom programming.

We also provide valuable opportunities for youth volunteers and offer youth mentorship programs. Through their participation in our programs, youth volunteers can accumulate volunteer hours, build a resume and gain valuable skills and knowledge. Our youth mentorship program provides opportunities for experienced youth volunteers to mentor new volunteers. We also offer engaging and interesting co-op placements for high school students and provide internship opportunities.

Cantelon: The Life & Works of William Edgar Cantelon will launch in celebration of May is Museum Month and will include a department wide exhibition highlighting Norfolk County’s beloved historian and prolific artist. This project has been ongoing for the past year documenting his works in both public and private collections and producing a documentary of his life and work.

Our goal continues to be to Inspire, Educate and Entertain and we hope that as you read through our 2023 Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Events, Exhibitions and Programs Guide you’ll find something that will do just that.

ANNUAL INDOOR STREETSCAPE YARD SALE

HARVESTFEST: MEMORIES OF THE DELHI HARVEST FESTIVAL

September 8-December 22

The Delhi Harvest Festival was Delhi’s biggest event for decades – the downtown came alive with a midway and special entertainment. Starting in 1970, community members competed in priming and hand tying contests; kids dressed up their bikes and pets. A highlight each year – one lucky young woman was chosen as the Ontario Tobacco Queen, and represented the tobacco industry all over Ontario. *Register for a day or an entire week! Registration starts Wednesday, May 10 online and in person and operates on a first come, first served basis. Camp runs from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for children 5 to 10 years of age. Cost is $33 per child. DTM&HC also offers Extended Camp Care from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for an additional $5 per day, per child. Camp days follow a school-based structure with two nutrition breaks.

Put on your sunscreen and join us for some outdoor exploration. This week, we will learn survival techniques and how to use a compass. Campers will take nature hikes, work in the garden, and spend lots of time outside.

Eureka! Sensational STEM week at the museum and that means the kids will be mixing up a bit of mad science, embracing their inner inventors, engineering tall towers and magnificent marble runs, and trying their hand at a little Museum CSI.

Top 10 Tips For Being a Better Researcher

This presentation will be a top ten countdown of what Ken considers the top tips and tricks for finding your ancestors. However, unlike the usual top ten lists Ken won’t be discussing the specifics of doing searches but will instead be looking at the big picture when doing your genealogy and family history research. Ken has been a genealogist for over 20 years and runs the blog Family Tree Knots, he lives in Ottawa.

Jenna has conducted extensive research on Chief Joseph Brant’s family history and in this presentation will share her research methodology and findings on Brant’s genealogy.

Jenna is the Digital Archives Technician at the Shingwauk Residential School Centre in Sault Ste. Marie and an independent genealogist who specializes in First Nations and Métis ancestry.

A conference style event that includes vendors, a used book sale of local history and genealogy books, a workshop and engaging sessions on family history research from various guest speakers across Ontario. In this workshop, Kathy will introduce you to the junk journal craft, teaching you how to assemble and embellish your own Christmas Advent Junk Journal. Launched in celebration of May is Museum Month, this Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Department wide exhibition highlights historian and artist William Edgar Cantelon. Norfolk County Archives will be showcasing the works of Simcoe and surrounding area and will highlight archival documents and photographs from Cantelon’s private papers.

Our in-person Captain’s Polar Bear Levee and Fiddle Party is back! Join us at the museum New Year’s Day. Bring your fiddle or other instrument and join in the fun, or sit back and enjoy the tunes and company. Doors will open at 1:00pm and the levee starts after the Polar Bear Dip. Admission is by donation. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Lifeline Food Bank. Orientation Day

Port Dover Harbour Museum is starting a Youth Volunteer and Mentorship program inspired by the successful Waterford Heritage and Agricultural Museum system. Youth volunteers can offer something unique to our programs, whether you have a special talent or interest or just enjoy working with kids.

The Youth Volunteer and Mentorship Program is offered to youth ages 13 and older. Volunteering is a great way to begin to build a resume, earn school volunteer hours, make new friends, and develop leadership skills.

Before they can begin to volunteer, all youths are required to attend an orientation day at PDHM. This short session includes an introduction to the museum, Health & Safety and AODA training, a fun museum challenge, and a pizza lunch. After successful completion of the museum orientation, youth volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in programming. Volunteers will be scheduled based on need. Pizza provided. Join us for full-day, in-person summer camps that are crammed full of cooperative games, competitions, dancing, drama activities, outdoor adventures and nature walks, experiments, crafts, and so much more! This year’s famous haunted walks are on the road with a special trip to historic Vittoria. This featured exhibit highlights Ontario’s bottling history through nearly 150 years of glass and stoneware vessels – ginger beers, sodas and siphons. You’ll be amazed at the variety and ingenuity of this bottling industry.

INNOVATION OF COCKSHUTT

Runs October through February, 2024

Founded as the Brantford Plow Works by James G. Cockshutt in 1877, the Cockshutt Plow Company was responsible for nearly a century of agricultural innovation with the launch of tractors, combines and farm implements. In partnership with Laurier University, Brantford and the Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre, this will be a featured exhibition in the Agricultural Gallery.

OUR COMMUNITY SERIES: A DISAPPEARING LANDSCAPE: THE TOWNSEND BARNS PROJECT PART II

WHAM’s summer camp aims to inspire, educate and challenge participants through fun and creative hands-on learning. Our dedicated and supportive staff and volunteers integrate outdoor play, creative crafts and community involvement into the daily activities. Camp is organized into theme weeks incorporating a variety of topics, guests and field trips.

Summer kicks off with a history-themed week! Campers will dig through time to explore how our ancestors and mammals once lived in Norfolk. Learn the tricks of the trade from archaeology, paleontology and conservation with special guests and some amazing handson learning.

Get your gross-out goggles on for this week! Challenges through food, insect and reptile exploration and outdoor endurance activities will have campers testing their limits. We’ll get our hands dirty in the kitchen and out on Waterford’s incredible Heritage Trails.

WHAM’s Got Talent!

Think you have what it takes to see your name in lights? This week we showcase our talents of all kinds through music, creative movement, drama and more! Learn what it takes to be a triple threat in Hollywood North.

Let’s do the Time-warp again!

July 31 – August 4

Hold on to your seats as we fly through time! We’ll visit a different decade every day of the week as we go from the 1920s – 1960s to explore the past. Everything from dance and clothing, to cartoons and sports of yesteryears will have campers walking down memory-lane.

Fun with Food

August 7 – 11

It’s time to put on the aprons and head into the kitchen! This week, campers will explore the world of food. They will learn to how to bake delicious desserts, create their own homemade pizza, and battle it out in WHAM’s annual cookie bake-off.

Around the World

August 14 - 18

Food, glorious food! We’ll indulge in treats from around the world this week as we explore new countries and cultures. Campers will also create their own passports for exploration of their imaginary countries where kids rule the world!

Summer Fiesta!

It’s the end of camp and that means it’s celebration time! Get your bathing suits ready for this week long party. We’ll be revisiting some of our most popular activities from past camp weeks and special projects designed by WHAM’s own Youth Volunteers.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

August 25 - 26

Who’s afraid of the dark? Not us! Spend the entire night at WHAM during our hugely popular Night at the Museum – it’s the perfect way to end your summer holiday! Participants spend the evening under the stars with campfire adventures and glow-inthe-dark games, stories, and S’mores. Outdoor activities are followed by popcorn and a movie on WHAM’s indoor big screen. A light breakfast is served Saturday morning prior to pickup.

Night at the Museum starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 25 with pickup at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26. Cost is $35 per child. Full details, including what campers need to bring, are available by contacting the museum or visiting our website.

We believe that each volunteer can offer something unique to our programs, whether you have a special talent, interest or just enjoy working with kids. The Youth Volunteer Mentorship Programs is offered to youth ages 13 and older. After successful completion of the museum orientation, youth volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in programming, help plan and implement camp events and activities, and take part in off-site trips. Returning youth volunteers are eligible to enrol as mentors; to partner with new participants and have the additional responsibility of planning WHAM’s hugely popular Night at the Museum. Orientation takes place Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Pizza lunch is provided. Application forms and further details are available on the museum website.

WHAM Kids: Junior Curator Program

Hey teachers! Contact the museum to see how we can adapt this program for your classes!

Calling all history and writing buffs! This new program will feature tours through the archives at WHAM. Our junior curators will learn about museum collections and artifacts while understanding the importance of preserving history. The Junior Curator program continues after leaving WHAM as students will construct creative writing articles detailing specific pieces from the collection. The finished products will be posted on our online blog for all to see!

All of WHAM’s school programs link to the Ontario Curriculum and add an experiential element that enhances learning. Specific programs have been developed for Grades 4, 7, 8 and 10. Call or visit the museum to learn more.
