Local Foods to Health Care Facilities Initiative

A leader in promoting locally grown food, Norfolk County expanded its work into the County’s health care facilities. Norfolk County’s Local Foods to Health Care Facilities Initiative was funded by The Greenbelt Fund, a sister organization of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.

With funding from the Ontario Government, the Fund helped to increase the amount of Ontario food served in daycares, schools, universities and colleges, hospitals and long-term care facilities through its program, the Broader Public Sector Investment Fund: Promoting Ontario Food.

Farms, Wineries, Culinary and Food Suppliers

Norfolk County is the top producing area for farm fresh produce in Ontario. From asparagus to zucchini, Norfolk’s growers supply major markets across North America. In fact, Norfolk County’s farmers sold more than $400 million in commodities in 2005, making them key players in a global marketplace. Norfolk produce is safe, tasty and competitively priced. The goal of the “Direct from Norfolk” Norfolkfarms.com campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of buying local produce and other farm products.

Fire Department

Norfolk County is divided into 11 fire districts. These districts are based on the principle of providing the appropriate fire or rescue service in the best possible time frame. Each fire district is serviced by a fire station. Fire stations vary in size and capability according to the fire protection and rescue needs of the fire district. The fire districts do not operate independently since all operations are coordinated through a common fire dispatch centre and it is very common for firefighters and fire apparatus to respond from more than one station to an incident, depending on the need.
