Mar. 18, 2019 – The Norfolk Potters’ Guild and Studio has been a hive of activity in recent weeks, and for good reason.

For 10 straight years, the local group has presented SoupART Bowls at the Norfolk Arts Centre. With the purchase of a ticket, patrons can enjoy savory soups from some of Norfolk’s finest restaurants, select a ceramic bowl handmade by a member of the Guild and also leave with a souvenir recipe book. This year’s event will be held March 21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. Tickets are $35.

Proceeds of the event go towards educational programming at the Norfolk Arts Centre.

“I think the members like being able to give something back to the community to help the children do programs, which is what the money goes towards,” said Simcoe’s Donna Samborski, a long-time member of the Guild.

Experienced potters like Samborski will often submit in the neighbourhood of 30 designs to be selected by Arts Centre staff. Newcomers generally offer between 5-10 bowls. In all, about 250 bowls will be up for grabs.

“They’re all handmade, they’re all different and you get to pick and choose which is nice – you’re not just given one,” said Samborski.

“There’s different sizes and shapes.”

Samborski admits that the days leading up to the event can be a little hectic around the Guild, but the work is done with a great cause in mind.

“I think it’s quite important … everyone puts helping the kids ahead of anything else, which is what it should be about as far as I’m concerned,” she said.

Providing soup will be The Barrel Restaurant, The Beach House, The Blue Elephant, The Combine, The Crepe House, The Erie Beach Hotel, Joy Bakery Café, Kerry’s St. James St. Eatery, Schofields Bistro, and Try Thai Tonight.

A limited number of tickets are available, they can be purchased in person at the Arts Centre (21 Lynwood Ave. Simcoe). The facility is open from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Norfolk Arts Centre members receive a 10 percent discount. For more information, visit norfolkartscentre.ca or email [email protected].
