September 3, 2014, Simcoe – An important milestone in Norfolk County’s arts, culture, and heritage community is approaching, as the Norfolk Arts Centre (NAC) prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Located at 21 Lynnwood Avenue in Simcoe, the NAC owns and maintains Norfolk County’s only permanent collection of visual art.  The approximately 800-piece collection contains works of art that have national, regional, and local significance.

To commemorate the milestone, the NAC is hosting an outdoor party on the south grounds of the Lynnwood National Historic Site.  The event is a fundraiser to support the ongoing preservation of the permanent collection, in accordance with regulations established by Heritage Canada.

Preservation and conservation efforts include rehabilitating artworks that have deteriorated over time, purchasing archival-quality furniture and storage materials, and making new acquisitions if appropriate works of art become available.

“Permanent art collections are important because they tell us who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going,” said Norfolk Arts Centre Director / Curator Deirdre Chisholm.

Norfolk County Mayor Dennis Travale has extended his congratulations to the many individuals who have contributed to the Norfolk Arts Centre’s success.

“The Norfolk Arts Center’s 40th anniversary is an important milestone that recognizes the significance of the arts and culture community in Norfolk County. The artists, volunteers, supporters and staff have contributed so much time, effort, and expertise to the gallery’s growth and success,” Travale said.   “I am proud to be the Mayor of a community that has a public art gallery of this caliber, and I look forward to continuing to support the proliferation of local art, culture, and heritage in Norfolk.”

The Norfolk Arts Centre celebrates its 40th anniversary on Saturday, September 13, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.  Devlin’s Country Bistro will cater the event, and wines from Burning Kiln Winery will be served.   The event also includes a silent auction, live music by Tom Atkins and friends, and a commemorative plate produced by Melissa Schooley, of Raging Bowl Pottery.  Ticket holders will be entered into a draw for one of three door prizes: a $250 gift certificate to Stratford Festival, a gift certificate for 2 dozen cupcake from Cupcakes by Sara or 2 tickets to the Alex Colville exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario which features a painting from the NAC permanent collection. Tickets are $100, including a $25 income tax receipt.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Norfolk Arts Centre, Liberty Home Decor and Gift Boutique, 26 Robinson Street, Simcoe and Jordan Stewart, 56 Norfolk Street South, Simcoe.

The Norfolk Arts Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the arts in Norfolk County.
