October 6, 2014 (Delhi, Ontario) — Today the GreenBug-Norfolk Waterpower Quance Dam Limited Partnership announced that it had obtained a 40-year Feed-in Tariff (“FIT”) Contract from the Ontario Power Authority in respect to the partnership’s plan to develop a 60 kilowatt micro hydro-electric project at the Quance Dam in Delhi.
The GreenBug-Norfolk Waterpower Quance Dam Limited Partnership was formed as a partnership between GreenBug Energy Inc of Delhi and Norfolk County for the purposes of developing the Delhi Quance dam for electricity production.
The project consists of an Archimedean Screw Micro Hydro-Electric System installed beside the existing low-head dam in the park behind the Delhi Tobacco Museum. The facility will operate as a run-of-river facility utilizing the seasonal water flows in Big Creek.
“We couldn’t be happier to be working with Norfolk County. They’ve shown some real leadership and will be the first municipality to install an Archimedes screw system in North America.” said Tony Bouk, Chief Executive Officer of GreenBug Energy.
The Archimedes screw, was developed by the Ancient Greek mathematician and engineer Archimedes of Syracuse around 200 B.C. for use as a pump mainly to irrigate fields, but GreenBug is utilizing the screw in reverse to harness the energy in falling water.
“The GreenBug-Norfolk micro hydro-electric project, located at the Quance Dam in Delhi, is an important milestone that recognizes the significance of producing energy in Norfolk County. GreenBug Energy and County staff have contributed much time and effort to make this project a reality.” Dennis Travale said. “I am proud to be the Mayor of a community that has the first ever partnership, in Ontario of this caliber, and I look forward to more energy projects, such as this, in the future in Norfolk County.” Councillor Jim Oliver, who also sits on the County’s Energy Conservation Committee as a Council representative, commented, “this project will provide a great demonstration of green energy technology developed by a local Norfolk County business, that has huge potential across Ontario and beyond.”
“We have been gathering site head and flow data and evaluating options while waiting for news of the FIT contract, and our next steps are to now complete the Class Environmental Assessment and detailed project plan. Our plan is for installation in summer 2015. ” said Brian Weber, Vice president of Operations of GreenBug Energy.
GreenBug Energy is a Norfolk County based business. It designs, engineers and manufactures Archimedes Screw Micro Hydro-Electric Systems for use on small weirs, dams, natural waterfalls and industrial outflows as low as one metre in height and sells and distributes the custom made systems domestically and internationally.
