SIMCOE, OCTOBER 1, 2014 The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit joins organizations across Canada and around the globe to celebrate and help promote the benefits of breastfeeding during World Breastfeeding Week. In Canada, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from October 1 to 7th.

The Health Unit works to protect promote and support breastfeeding mothers and are currently working towards receiving the Baby-Friendly Initiative designation. BFI, a global program of the World Health Organization and UNICEF, supports mothers in making informed decisions about feeding their child. A BFI designation indicates that a organization recognizes the importance of protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for babies and offers natural, health promoting ingredients.

As part of the Health Units BFI designation, all Haldimand and Norfolk county buildings support breastfeeding mothers by offering a private space to feed their babies.

The goal is to educate women prenatally to help them make an educated and informed choice when deciding how to feed their baby. And to send a message to mothers: Whatever your choice, we are here to support you.

For more information on feeding your baby, please contact the health unit at 519-426-6170 or 905-318-5367 and ask to speak to a public health nurse on the Maternal and Child Health team, or visit our website at www.hnhu.org.
