Simcoe, ON – June 16th, 2014.  Is it really possible to stay safe and satisfy your family’s craving for good summer fun? The Simcoe Community Policing Committee and Norfolk County Aquatics aim to address this issue as they host the second annual Community Water Safety Day on June 21, 2014 at the Port Dover beach. Their goal is to educate the public about the dangers associated with risky swimming, the benefits of safe swimming, and how to prevent water accidents in a fun way.

Every year approximately 525 Canadians die in water-related accidents. The question is who, where, when, and why. In 2012, there were 3 drownings in Norfolk County; in 2013 there were none. This year we hope to see the same result.

This year the event will assume a trade-show set up with representatives from the OPP Marine Unit, OPP Underwater Search and Rescue, Canadian Coast Guard, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Cancer Society, Norfolk Power Squad, Norfolk Fire and Rescue, Ontario Early Years, Southcoast Water Sports, and more! The schedule for the day is full of interactive activities, games and prizes for families, emergency situation demonstrations and first aid learning opportunities. Informative brochures and pamphlets will also be available.

Over the past few weeks tombstones have been placed at various locations throughout the county in preparation for this water safety day. The campaign was aimed at reaching the residents and visitors of Norfolk County to communicate the high importance of water safety.

As summer quickly approaches, many people get excited about swimming, boating, and being out in the sun. Residents of Norfolk County are blessed with a wide variety of water sources including creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, pools, hot tubs and water parks. However, many people overlook the dangers that are associated with open water. With this event we hope to provide families and individuals with enough information to maintain a fun but protected environment.

Let’s make this a fun and safe summer!
