Simcoe, On – April 13, 2015  On April 16, 1985, Norfolk’s Own Needle Arts Guild (NONAG) held its first meeting as a guild at the Norfolk Arts Centre. Almost 30 years to the date of their inauguration, the NAC is happy to present Celebrating 30 Years of Needle Arts: Norfolk’s Own Needle Arts Guild.

Works in this exhibition range in technique from embroidery to tatting (a form of lace making), bringing to life the long and varied history of needle arts. Through their contemporary practice the NONAG keep alive what would otherwise become lost methods of craftwork. Visitors to the exhibition will find, among others, examples of Jacobean embroidery, a style that flourished in the early 17th century, and Ruskin Lace, named after John Ruskin, leader in the Victorian Arts and Crafts Movement. Also on exhibition – the Canadian Reflections Quilt, a national quilting project spearheaded by the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada, on loan from its Winnipeg location.

Celebrating 30 Years of Needle Arts: Norfolk’s Own Needle Arts Guild will be on exhibition at the Norfolk Arts Centre from Monday, April 13th to Friday, June 5th. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Saturday,
April 18th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Members of NONAG will be conducting on-site demonstration for the public on Saturdays, May 2, 16 and 30 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. On Saturday, May 2 NONAG members will conduct a bookmark workshop for children ages 8-12; for more information or to register contact the Norfolk Arts Centre at 519-428-0540.
