Norfolk County , under license number # 4690581, operates sixteen active cemeteries and twenty-seven abandoned cemeteries. In Norfolk County there is a total of one hundred and eleven documented burial sites / cemeteries.
Presently, all previous volunteer cemetery boards remain in place, although of the sixteen active cemeteries, three are in the stages of being assumed by Norfolk County and the status of the existing boards remains to be determined. The assumption of cemetery operations by a municipality is legislated under the Cemeteries Act.
At present, Norfolk County Cemeteries Division is managed by a part-time Superintendent, has one Administrative and Operations Clerk, shares operational staff from a pool of 29 Parks & Facilities Maintenance employees, and contracts out the majority of grass cutting in abandoned cemeteries.
Interment statistics indicate an average of 160 burials per year, with the majority of such in Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe and Bayview Cemetery, Port Rowan.
Norfolk County Cemeteries Division has updated the by-law and rates and fees schedule for Oakwood Cemetery and it is proposed all other active cemeteries will have such review completed by January 1 st , 2007.
Mapping of all cemetery locations has been completed, as well as a contact list for all cemeteries, public and private. This mapping is being complimented by the compiling and copying of all cemetery burial records and maps for safe storage with Norfolk County . Digitization and entry in cemetery database software is ongoing with Oakwood Cemetery being completed by January 1 st , 2007, Bayview Cemetery being completed by mid-2007, and under a partnership agreement Delhi Cemetery being completed in early 2008.
