Nominations are open from Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Friday, July 27, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

To run for the office of mayor, councillor or school board trustee for the 2018 municipal election, you must file a nomination paper.

  • Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign.
  • Mayor and councillor candidates must provide, along with their nomination paper, at least 25 declaration of endorsements from eligible electors.

Candidates/Potential Candidates with questions are asked to submit them to Council Services for response. To ensure all Candidates receive the same responses Council Services has posted a Candidate FAQs sheet that will be routinely updated throughout the election.

Council Services will be hosting two candidate information sessions for people who are interested in running for mayor, councillor or school board trustee for the 2018 municipal election.

Key Dates 2018-2019

Tuesday May 1, 2018

  • First day for candidates to file a nomination paper for the office of mayor, councillor or school board trustee.
  • First day for an individual or entity to file a notice of registration as a third party advertiser.
  • Campaign period begins once a candidate’s nomination paper is filed, or once a third party advertiser’s registration is certified.
  • Preliminary expense limit and other legislative documentation is provided to a candidate on the day they file, or to a registered third party advertiser following certification.

Friday July 27, 2018

  • Last day for a candidate to file a nomination.
  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – nominations or withdrawal cannot be accepted beyond 2 p.m.

Monday July 30, 2018

  • Certification of nomination papers to be completed by 4 p.m.
  • Declaration of acclamation provided after 4 p.m.
  • After the certification of the candidates, Proxy appointment forms available for electors who can not vote on any of the voting days.

Tuesday September 4, 2018

  • Voters’ list available to certified candidates.
  • Revision period begins – Electors may update or add their name to the voters’ list.

Tuesday September 25, 2018

  • Final expense limits provided to candidates and third party advertisers.

Friday October 19, 2018

  • Last day for an individual or entity to file a notice of registration as a third party advertiser.

Monday October 22, 2018

  • Voting day, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Monday December 31, 2018

  • Campaign period ends for candidates and registered third parties.
  • Last day for candidate or registered third parties to file an Extension of campaign period.

Wednesday February 27, 2019

  • Last day for Clerk to provide notice of financial filing requirements and penalties to candidates and registered third parties.

Thursday March 28, 2019

  • Last day for candidate or registered third party to apply to Superior Court of Justice to extend the time to file the financial statement.

Friday March 29, 2019

  • By 2 p.m.: Last day to file a primary financial statement for reporting period ending December 31, 2018 – applies to all candidates and third party advertisers.
  • Last day for candidate or registered third party to notify Clerk of filing extension received from the Superior Court of Justice.

Monday April 29, 2019

  • Last day (by 2 p.m.) for candidate or registered third party to file a primary financial statement and pay $500 late filing fee.
  • Penalties take affect at 2:01 p.m.

Thursday June 27, 2019

  • Last day to request a compliance audit on a primary financial statement.

Tuesday July 2, 2019

  • Last day to request a compliance audit on a primary financial statement.
  • End of supplementary campaign period.

Wednesday August 28, 2019

  • Last day for Clerk to provide notice of supplementary filing requirements and penalties to candidates or registered third parties.

Thursday September 26, 2019

  • Last day for candidate or registered third party to apply to Superior Court of Justice to extend the time to file the financial statement.

Friday September 27, 2019

  • By 2 p.m.: Last day to file a supplementary financial statement for reporting period ending July 2, 2019 – only applied to those who filed a Form 6 to extend the campaign period.
  • Last day for candidate or registered third party to notify Clerk of filing extension received from the Superior Court of Justice.

Monday October 28, 2019

  • Last day (by 2 p.m.) for candidate or registered third party to file a supplementary financial statement and pay $500 late filing fee.
  • Penalties take affect at 2:01 p.m.

Friday December 27, 2019

  • Last day to request a compliance audit on a supplementary financial statement.

Candidates in Default

Below is a list of candidates who are in default of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 because they did not file their financial statement or exceeded the expense limit in the 2014 municipal election or subsequent by-elections.

The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 states those who are in default cannot run until after the next general election has taken place.
